Parksville plans on going global in next Bloom event

Sharpen your garden trowels and tidy up ‘round the yard - Parksville has announced its official intention to compete on a global scale in the Communities in Bloom International 2008 competition. "The systems are in place and I feel very confident we can compete at this level,"said Councillor Chris Burger who raised motion aimed at the city's participation, which was subsequently endorsed, at the city's most recent council meeting. "It's the only level we have left to compete at and win,"Burger said. "The steering committee never stops meeting. They're ready and enthusiastic about our chances." In 2007 The city opted out of formal competition, joining in the friends category after winning previously in the Canadian Classic, Provincial and National categories. Parksville has maintained its five-bloom status for cities of its size and the national win means the requirement to participate on the world stage has been met. Previous winners internationally have included Aberdeen Scotland and Fayetteville Arkansas. More than just floral displays, participating municipalities are rigorously judged on set criteria that includes such things as community involvement and heritage preservation. In 2006 judges took particular notice of the Community Park's arboretum when announcing the city's win of Five Blooms.
