Re-thinking bio-fuels

The Town of Qualicum Beach won't give the green light for any more of their vehicle fleet to run on bio-fuel any time soon. Speaking at Wednesday's regular council meeting, Councillor Barry Avis said the purchase of vehicles using bio-fuels seemed like a good idea at the time, but requires a second look. "We have all spoken about bio-fuels and they appeared to be a good initiative, but some information is coming out now that they could be a net loss to society,"he said. At an earlier meeting, Coun. Mike Wansink made a point of expressing concern about the use of bio-fuels, noting in order to replace teh use of gasoline entirely, bio-fuels would require more farm land than exists on earth. Mayor Teunis Westbroek agreed with the note of caution. "Councillor Wansink shared his concerns and I share that concern and I don't think there should be any further conversions,"he said. Currently, the municipality has one vehicle in service which can run on bio-fuel. news@pqbnews.com
